  • What Researchers Say
  • Your Solution

scaredIf you or your child has been diagnosed with scoliosis then you may have been told that there are basically three choices — surgery, bracing or do nothing.

All three of these options come with complications:

  • Surgeries – The techniques used are very invasive and you always run the risk of surgical errors or damage.  Considering the spine houses the delicate nerves that control all function and healing of the body, damage in this part of your body can cause major problems.  The surgery consists of implanting metal rods and screws directly into the spine to straighten it.  There have been studies that have shown complications that can include rusting, corrosion, or the rods breaking completely which prove this option can be actually dangerous.  Also, its possible that after the surgery, patients can be legally declared permanently disabled.
  • Bracing – Although effective at straightening the spine while the brace is worn cause the muscles to weaken so the scoliosis can get worse when not wearing the brace.  Therefore this is not a good option for long term results of correction.  And one study done by the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Iowa looked at bracing versus non-bracing. The study concluded there was NO difference noticed in the surgery rates (Spine 2007).  In other words, bracing did nothing for those scoliosis patients long term. Furthermore, their curvature progressed similar to those who did nothing.  Also, other studies have shown that patients felt bracing limited them in their lives and some even reported that having to wear a brace left a psychological scar.
  • Doing nothing – This can be a common prescription by doctors but unfortunately most scoliosis conditions are progressive meaning they will get worse in time without intervening so this option is won’t yield positive results in the future.  Misalignments such as scoliosis will put pressure on your nerves and accelerate the degenerative process of the joints of the spine causing further nerve damage.

Despite What You’ve Been Told, There Are More Options.  A Less Invasive Treatment Can Help.

At Maximized Health in Burlington, our doctors have helped hundreds of scoliosis patients with chiropractic to straighten up, feel better, increase mobility, rid their bodies of back pain and return to a normal life.  Chiropractic has a long record of helping people with scoliosis.  If you have scoliosis, then this could be your best option!

A study in a scientific journal from 2001 (JMPT) showed an actual decrease in the abnormal curvature of scoliosis patients who received chiropractic care.  The lead from the study, Dr. Charles Lantz, DC, PhD said…

“Chiropractic appears to offer a distinct advantage in the management and monitoring of early stage scoliosis.”

It was important to note that from this study it was concluded that the sooner a someone started treatment, the better the chances of change in the curvature.

Another study demonstrated that “the combined use of spinal manipulation [chiropractic care] and postural therapy appeared to significantly reduce the severity of the Cobb angle in all 19 subjects.” (BMC Muscoloskelet Disorders 2004).  The Cobb angle is a measurement to determine the amount of improper curvature of a patient with scoliosis.
