Attention Headache Sufferers!

Its that time of the year when the weather is all over the place, we are stuck inside with little sunlight, generally not moving as much as we should be and the conditions are just right for us to get a headache. Headaches can be very common and quite difficult to diagnose as they can have a number of causes. Fortunately, most headaches do not require immediate medical attention and can gradually improve with time. However when headaches affect your daily life and quality of life it is time to seek attention from a qualified health professional.

Why Does my Head Hurt?

There are different triggers that can be causing your headaches. Most of these triggers are from physical stress and/or emotional stress. Examples of physical stress can be from sitting at your computer for 8+ hours a day in poor posture, or poor sleep habits (see our previous blog for sleep solutions!). Tension headaches account for 90% of all headaches. That means that most headaches are the result of muscle tension in your neck and/or upper back.  This is where chiropractors are perfectly lined up as a provider that can diagnose and treat the causes associated with most headaches. Pharmaceutical medications for the most part are ineffective in treating these headaches as they simply attempt to mask the problem or dull the pain. Even worse people have become conditioned to become overly reliant on products like Advil or Tylenol for dealing with their headaches and rely on them as their primary line of defence.

Help Yourself
The most important tip for resolving your headache is to remove the trigger that is causing it in the first place. Since the majority of headaches are based on tension in the neck and shoulders you need to work at removing the physical stress causing them to get tense. If you work at a computer and find yourself in poor postures throughout the day… work at taking mini “posture breaks”. Every hour get out of your seat and take a walk around the office or do some light neck  and shoulder stretches while at your desk. At home, work on releasing your tight muscles with self release techniques using a tennis ball or foam roller. Increase your water intake throughout the day rather then lining up for that third coffee of the day. There are many ways you can help yourself when it comes to dealing with your headaches.
We’re Here to Help!
If your headaches are persistent and not improving with some self help or if your tired of turning to products like Advil or Tylenol for your primary line of defence. its time to do something about the problem. Evidence has demonstrated that chiropractic care, including spinal adjustments, mobilizations, soft tissue therapy, and acupuncture can be an effective treatment for tension-type headaches. At Maximized Health our team is here to help get you back to the quality of life that you and your family deserve.

Harvard Doctor Acknowledges What Chiropractors Have Been Saying For Years

“The wisdom of the body is responsible for 90% of the hope of patients to recover. The body has a super wisdom that is in favor of life, rather than death. This is the power that we depend on for life. All doctors are responsible for letting their patients know of this great force working within them.”

* Dr. Richard Cabot, Harvard Medical School

With a quick look you would expect that a Chiropractor wrote this quote, however it was actually a Harvard Medical School professor in the late 1800’s. Although this universal law has not directed much attention from the current medical and pharmaceutical community, it has been at the core of Chiropractic practice since its inception.

Chiropractors have asserted the idea that “the Power that makes the body, heals the body.” The wisdom that Dr. Cabot mentions in his quote refers to the term Innate Intelligence used by Chiropractors. It refers to the Life that is within our cells, tissues, and organs. It is the harmonizing force that controls our body’s chemical balance. It coordinates all steps attributing to the healing process, from fixing a broken bone to settling cancer into remission. This force is in favor of your living, versus your dying.

It is a crucial responsibility of the Chiropractor to educate you about this great force, and to help keep you aligned with it. If you want to know who the REAL doctors are who are accountable for healing you, look in the mirror, that person is staring right back at you!  The best doctor in the world is you!

Do you have chiropractic insurance benefits? You must read this… HomeChiropractic 101Do you have chiropractic insurance benefits? You must read this…

Its an important fact to note that if you’re fortunate enough to have insurance benefits whether its private or through the company that you work for, insurance is only designed for short term pain relief of a recent illness, injury, or disease.  Its possible that some insurance plans provide care for the long term and chronic conditions, most do not.

This poses a few big problems for your care:

  1. The insurance provider never sees your examination results and have no idea what would be required to correct the problem or even what would be needed for pain relief even.  They blanket everyone on a particular plan with the same allotted amount of care.
  2.  There is absolutely NO consideration of prevention or wellness outside the traditional medicating or early detection model more known in the medical model of healthcare.

The question is would you like our doctors to make their recommendations based on your chiropractic insurance coverage or would you prefer recommendations to correct the problem based on the best evidence principle?  I hope that everyone would choose the latter.

Some practices do choose to limit their practice to pain relief only and this is okay and this is what some patients want.  However we chose to broaden our scope to prevention and wellness in addition to alleviating pain.

Choosing A Chiropractor

Within the chiropractic profession there are many ways to practice which may make choosing a chiropractor difficult because there’s so many options.  The biggest differentiation is whether a chiropractor office has a focus on pain relief or prevention and wellness.  Here is why we have chosen to help our patients with prevention and wellness:

  • Research has shown that if your spine is left in an improper position or a segment of the spine is stuck or not moving as well, the spine will degenerate (sometimes silently) and if it degenerates enough, then changes in the bone can put pressure on the adjacent nerves.
  • The last thing to show up when you have a condition in the body is the symptom and the first thing to go away when you begin to correct it is the symptom
  • Correcting the pain rarely corrects the underlying problem

Like changing the bone alignment in your mouth with braces, specific frequency and duration of your care are important to making changes to your spine.  We us advanced spinal correction techniques combined with our Spinal Hygiene Program to help correct the problem.

We base our recommendations on what it will take to correct your condition, not based on how much insurance coverage you have.

Do Chiropractors Get Adjusted?

To the surprise of one of our chiropractors the other day, a patient asked “Do you get adjusted too?” to which the doctor replied “Of Course!”.  That makes us wonder how many other patients don’t know that our doctors and staff all get adjusted regularly as well.  Obviously we have missed something in communicating this essential bit of information to our patients.  This is the BIG PICTURE.  If our patients really knew what chiropractic is truly about like we thought they did then they wouldn’t be asking these questions.

Chiropractic is more known for helping people with back pain, neck pain, headaches, numbness or tingling, and chiropractic is less known for helping with blood pressure, ear infections, bed wetting, heartburn and many more symptoms.  However, chiropractic does much, much more!  Chiropractic does NOT treat these specific conditions.

Chiropractic removes something called a subluxation in the spine that is an interference to the normal functioning of the body including healing.  Having the above listed symptoms disappear after these subluxations have been removed is merely a side effect to normal body function.  At some point along the way there has been a disconnect with this understanding and most people think of chiropractic as merely a safer “alternative” treatment for symptoms compared to medications.

So Why Do Our Doctors Need to Get Adjusted?

Because our doctors understand the following and to maximize your health you must be living subluxation free:

SUBLUXATION:  A condition of the spine where there is lack of movement or lack of position of a segment (vertebrae) that is causing your body to function less than 100% – interference to the flow of innate intelligence.

INNATE INTELLIGENCE:  The expression of life and control of all of the functioning of your body

ADJUSTMENT:  The chiropractic technique used to remove a subluxation in order to allow the body to move towards 100% health.

Simply, chiropractic is the detection and correction of subluxation, with the intent of restoring the flow of innate intelligence so that every person receiving care can express as closest to 100% health as possible based on the individuals lifestyle.

What can cause subluxations?

To keep this simple its the 3 big stresses in our lives:

  1. Physical Stress or Trauma
  2. Emotional Stress
  3. Physiological / Nutrional / Environmental Deficiency or Toxicity

Chiropractors are exposed to the same above stresses so  it is important that they get adjusted as well if they want to experience maximized health.

Enjoy LIFE. Get Adjusted.
